Cities are multispecies spaces in which humans and animals engage in a wide range of complex interactions. In this two day conference we aim to explore some of the interconnections between animals, cities, and sustainability. There have been increasing calls to understand how urban animals are part of urban environments, polities, and socialities. These calls raise a number of important ethical and political questions about how animals are included/excluded in imaginaries and practices of what constitute “cities” and “sustainability.” To that end, Vienna Animals Studies (VAS) and the Star Competence Center invite contributions to this interdisciplinary conference that explore how cities might be reimagined as shared habitats and sites of coexistence, as well as the challenges and opportunities that arise from such reconfigurations.
